The Eco Grant: The Energy Company Obligation Explained

Posted on June 21, 2024
No Comments

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) stands as a significant energy efficiency scheme for Great Britain, compelling larger energy suppliers to deliver energy-saving measures to residential properties. Focusing on insulation and heating enhancements, ECO aims to support vulnerable consumer groups, reduce carbon emissions, secure energy supply, and combat fuel poverty.

Originally, ECO2 was planned to end in March 2017 but received an 18-month extension known as ‘ECO2t,’ concluding in September 2018. Subsequently, ECO3 took effect from October 2018 until March 2022. Now, ECO4, launched on April 2022, is set to run until March 2026. Discover how UK Eco Solutions can help you now by contacting us.
The government’s response to the ECO4 consultation outlines the policy framework of this ambitious scheme. By staying updated with ECO news, we can actively contribute to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
The Scheme Will Continue To Deliver Energy Efficiency And Heating Measures To Homes In Great Britain And Will Include:
  • Focusing the entire scheme to support low-income, vulnerable and fuel-poor households
  • Requiring 15% of measures to be delivered to rural homes
  • Increasing the proportion of the scheme that can be delivered under local authority flexible eligibility to 25%
  • Allowing up to 50% of a supplier’s obligation to be met through the delivery of new, innovative products
  • Supporting households that have a broken heating system by allowing the equivalent of 35,000 broken heating systems to be replaced per year
  • Encouraging a multiple measure approach by allowing the replacement of inefficient heating systems to be replaced (outside of the broken heating system cap) if they are installed alongside insulation
  • Requiring the equivalent of at least 90,000 solid walled homes to be treated per year, either through solid wall insulation, or using a combination of other technologies (if equivalent savings can be achieved in the property)
